Happy New Year’s Eve, y’all. It’s the last day of 2021, and honestly, in saying what we’re all probably thinking, thank fuck we’ve made it.
As the clock ticks closer to the beginning of a new year, as we hang the goon sacks on the washing line, or as we sit with our drink-of-choice in hand as New Years Eve (ily Zac Efron) plays on every single channel, like me, you’re probably reflecting on the past 365 days, celebrating your highs and your lows, and preparing for what’s to come.

With the new year also comes promises of grandeur. Of bigger and better. Aspirations of finally learning that language, smashing those fitness goals, or in my personal case, of not spending money frivolously under the banner of: tReAt yOuRsElf!!! We set resolutions to usher in a brighter future, using goals to carry us forwards in a year that seems hauntingly unknown.
Much like the new year, award-winning Queer Eye also carries with it the assurance of a new beginning. In its latest season, the Fab Five – comprised of grooming guru Jonathan Van Ness, food and wine expert Antoni Porowski (who in case you were still wondering, CAN definitely cook), cultural guide Karamo Brown, fashion extraordinaire Tan France, and deft designer Bobby Berk – turn their attention to Republican state Texas, performing life-changing makeovers to 10 new individuals in need, while facing their own challenges in the process.
And whilst these transformations are indeed magical, the real power lies in the possibility that they offer – a chance for these individuals to take their first step towards living happier, truer lives. It’s a new beginning for overworked animal rescuer Jamie, who can start taking care of herself, rather than just others. It’s a new beginning for powerlifter Angel, who can finally start living her authentic life as a trans woman with her father’s support. And it’s a new beginning for rugged cattle ranger Josh, who finally has the means to create the family that he’s always wanted.
As each episode fades to black, it’s the expanse of this possibility, the open-ended question of how these lives will play out, that only adds to the impact of it all. The beauty of Queer Eye is in welcoming a new era, one that lies beyond the capture of the camera. It’s about continuing to move forward, one step at a time, into the vast unknown.
And so, as we count down the seconds to 2022, perhaps it’s this lesson from the series that we should carry with us. The past few years have been arduous, and the road ahead seems just as daunting. To that end, let’s scrap the resolutions and simply find contentment in a new start. Let us just put one foot in front of the other, and tell ourselves that it’s more than enough.
In the words of Jonathan Van Ness: “You’re strong, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song. You got this.”
